Red Wines from Spain and Australia

In the wine world, we talk about the “Old World” and the “New World.” The Old World refers to the countries in Europe, while the New World includes countries like Australia, New Zealand, Chile, Argentina, and the USA. This year, we have combined a red wine from Spain with a beautiful wine from Australia. Two top wines from different continents.

Mount Langi Ghiran Victoria Billi Billi Shiraz 2021

The calling card of one of Australia’s top producers. A delicious, characteristic Australian Shiraz, rightly regarded by critics as best value.

Want to get to know one of the absolute top producers of Australia? Then try the red Billi Billi from Shiraz icon Mount Langi Ghiran. While this wine may be the affordable calling card of the estate, it clearly showcases the excellence of Mount Langi.

The grapes are harvested from an average of thirty-year-old vines in various top-quality, cool-climate vineyards in Victoria. A portion of the harvest comes from the Grampians – the subregion with the impressive mountain range of the same name, where Mount Langi is located. A small part even comes from the estate’s own vineyards, which also supply the grapes for the legendary Langi Shiraz.

In the cellar, only natural, grape-derived yeasts are used for fermentation. To create a pure, fruity style, no oak barrels are used. However, the skins are regularly submerged for extra extraction of color and aromas.

The Billi Billi is thus a deeply colored red wine, with aromas of ripe cherries, pepper, and licorice, and a smooth, seductive taste. A delicious, characteristic Shiraz, rightly regarded by critics as best value.

Tasting Notes

A ruby-red wine with an inviting aroma of red cherry, blackberry, black currant, mint, and bay leaf. The taste is full, ripe-fruited with balanced acidity and smooth tannins. A lingering finish with hints of pepper and licorice.

Food Pairing

A seductive, lightly spiced red wine to drink on its own or with flavorful dishes. Perfect with grilled eggplant, mashed potatoes, pasta with tomato and spices, or roast lamb.

Aging Potential

Now at its best; will keep for at least 6 years after harvest.

Bodegas Ponce Manchuela El Mirador de la Casilla Syrah

Although Spanish, a fantastic example of a classic Northern Rhône-style Syrah made by the Manchuela pioneer Juan Antonio Ponce. The authoritative wine journalist Luis Guttiérrez, Spain specialist for Robert Parker, considers him the best in the region. A truly organic wine, naturally fermented and bottled without filtration or fining.

Juan Antonio Ponce, a pioneer of the Manchuela region, is known for his fantastic wines made from Bobal and other local grape varieties, but he also handles international Syrah exceptionally well.

Juan Antonio harvests the grapes from a small, seventeen-year-old vineyard with a soil composition of limestone and clay. After harvesting, he ferments the Syrah using native yeasts. The wine then ages for eight months in French oak barrels. Juan Antonio bottles the wine unfiltered and unfined to preserve as much flavor as possible.

The result is a beautiful, pure red wine that combines both the typical characteristics of a great Syrah and the unmistakable Ponce signature. El Mirador boasts delicious, juicy cherry fruit, a touch of black pepper, and a subtle oak influence.

Like all of Ponce’s remarkable wines, this one impresses with its notable elegance for a wine from such a warm region. The Syrah is beautifully ripe, but also fresh, subtle, full of finesse, and relatively modest in alcohol content. Don’t miss it, as Ponce has bottled a very limited edition, exclusively for us!

Tasting Notes

A youthful, purplish-red wine with an elegant aroma of cherry, blackberry, toast, and pepper. Refined in taste with pure fruit, ripe tannins, and refreshing acidity. The finish is elegant with notes of graphite and smoky oak.

Food Pairing

A wonderfully juicy Syrah in Northern Rhône style, perfect on its own or with lightly spiced dishes. Pairs beautifully with braised beef with Brussels sprouts, roasted pumpkins with lentil salad, or grilled vegetable dishes.
